Road Milling
Road milling is the process of removing part of the top layer of an asphalt surface. The process removes the old asphalt, grinds it, and recycles the material to be used as the aggregate for re-paving the surface.
There are various reasons that road milling is effective for asphalt surfaces and is used in maintaining area infrastructure. Many types of asphalt damage including rutting, shoving, raveling, and bleeding may lead to the need for road repair.
The Asphalt Recycling and Reclaiming Association has defined five specific classes of asphalt milling, also known as cold planing:
- To remove surface irregularities
- To uniform depth as shown on plans and specifications
- Class II with the addition of cross-slope
- To the base or subgrade
- To different depths at different locations
The process is used as a precursor to re-paving a surface and is an important step in asphalt repair. It is also a critical step in protecting your asphalt investment. Pavecon is committed to maintaining asphalt integrity and road milling is just one of the many services available.
